Tom Aley of OUL - Exploring an Underground Ozark Cave (PART 1)

We're visiting with the world's leading karst expert, Tom Aley of The Ozark Underground Laboratory (OUL) to discuss the importance of groundwater and its impact on human and wildlife health. We also dive into some of the craziest things Tom and his team have found in his cave...an endemic snail, some bear bones, and even a jaguar bone (just to name a few). Tom's friend and colleague Dave Woods also joined us for the conversation and took us down into the cave afterwards. We'll be back next week with Dave to discuss our findings on Part 2. Enjoy!

The Check Station
The Ozark Podcast’s "Check Station" harkens back to the old days when hunters would gather at physical check stations to register their deer, swap stories, and celebrate the hunt. Before digital reporting, these spots were more than just a requirement—they were a ritual, a place where the deer camp spirit came alive through handshakes, laughter, and tradition. The Check Station revives that tradition, creating a space where outdoorsmen and women can share their experiences, showcase their harvests, and keep the storytelling heritage of the Ozarks alive. It’s more than just checking in—it’s about connection, camaraderie, and carrying forward the traditions that define the hunting culture of the region.
Neosho: Symbol of the Ozarks
In 2018, a previously classified strain of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu) was elevated to its own unique species: Micropterus velox aka the Neosho Bass. This is the story of its re-classification, its hard fighting nature, and its fight for survival in the Ozark Mountains Region.

As someone who is a native Arkansas and has some deep roots in the delta, but has driven 1-2 hours to hunt and explore the Ozarks my whole life, I absolutely love listening to this pod. So cool to hear the guys talk about things and places I know/have been, hear strategies, legends, folklore, and other things that are all Ozark. It's a special and under appreciated region of this country. Will be listening for as long as this show is on.
